Miró’s colours and landscapes in Mont-roig

Mont-roig is a town in Baix Camp region, located 15 km from Reus. This town of 11,500 inhabitants is located in the inland of the region, very close to both the sea and the pre-coastal mountains.

Its name comes from the red mountain “mont-roig” called Areny Mountain. This mountain, 395 meters high, is formed by reddish sandstone that, due to erosion, has generated capricious shapes in its rock.

This special landscape bathed by the Mediterranean sun, the blue of the sea, the reddish colour of the mountains and the green fields of olive trees and carob trees inspired the artist Joan Miró.

Miró came from Barcelona to Mont-roig for the first time at the age of 18, to recover from fevers. His father had bought a farmhouse in the country and, since then, not only did he recover his health but he also found an inspiring landscape for his work. Miró returned every summer to his beloved Mont-roig, a place he always kept in his heart.

The result of this link is his paintings La Masia, Tierra labrada or San Ramón.

In Mont-roig we find spaces related to the artist: The country house, the village and the hermitage of the Virgen of la Roca.

Itinerary

We will start the visit in Mas Miró, the old farmhouse of the Miró family in Mont-roig. This complex has been restored and shows the space where Miró used to live and paint. The complex is made up of the farmhouse, the garden, the chapel, the fields, the henhouse and the corral, a welcoming space that includes an audiovisual.

After the visit to the farmhouse, we will go to the village of Mont-roig and see the perspectives of the paintings that Miró painted. After that, we will move to the hermitage of the Virgin of la Roca, located on the Roca Mountain, where we can enjoy magnificent views of the olive groves and the Mediterranean Sea.
