History, olive trees and flavours of Escornalbou

Riudecanyes, in Baix Camp region, is located inland, between Argentera Mountain Range and Costa Dorada.

After the Reconquest, King Alfonso the 2nd of Aragón and the 1st of Catalonia ordered the construction of a church and a monastery on this mountain. The monastery, located 600 metres above sea level became an important religious and administrative centre for the Barony, whose capital we Riudecanyes. The monastery was used until the 19th century. After that, it became abandoned. After decades of neglect, the Reus diplomat Eduardo Toda acquired the old building to rebuild it as a private house. Nowadays, the  Sant Miquel d’ Escornalbou Monastery is one of the most beautiful monuments in the province of Tarragona.

Both the mountain and the monastery give their name to Escornalbou Extra Virgin Olive Oil. This product is made in Riudecanyes Cooperative and has become an important sign of identity for the people of the old Barony.
